Road works
iron Bridge, Rome
Following the fire that broke out on the night between October 2 and 3, 2021, the Ponte dell'Industria—a key infrastructure hub connecting the Portuense and Ostiense neighborhoods—reported serious structural damage.
The original project involved widening the roadway to allow public transport transit and building a lateral walkway on the north side for pedestrians.
During the executive design phase, however, further improvement requirements emerged that had not been addressed in the preliminary phase. Specifically, it was necessary to increase the roadway cross-section, provide for the construction of two lateral walkways—one for pedestrians and one for bicycles—and proceed with the conservative restoration of the bridge's historic arches, given the historical and architectural value of the existing structure. These historic elements will be repositioned on the new structure to maintain the original architectural signature.
The bridge in its final configuration will provide the historical truss beams relaunched and sustained by the new structural deck previously completed and opened to traffic since march 2025; the retrofitted bridge now carries a 7.5m wide road platform with two lateral cycle/pedestrian walkways of 2.2m each.
