The project includes, for the new East carriageway heading towards Teramo, the S. Antonio and Vomano viaducts with a continuous steel-concrete beam on 70m spans, for a total of 3200m, with box-type piers and foundations on piles or wells of diameter 10m. The design of the Carestia tunnel of about 800m in length and numerous defense works with multi-armored bulkheads over 10m in height are also included. Among the works, the Saint Antonio viaduct is the most important work not only from an economic point of view, but also as far as technical and realization aspects are concerned. It consists of 72 spans approximately 35m long with decks consisting of 2 precast beams with continuous slab in place. The essential aspects, in addition to those mentioned above, are related to the study of the foundations of this viaduct. The infrastructure in the section in question, is affected by many unstable slopes; this circumstance induced the designers of the existing viaduct, 20 years ago, to use wells for all the piers. In our case, a careful study of the geomorphology of the territory has led to a differentiation of the types of foundation, so that more economic pile foundations (φ1500) could be chosen for the valley floor areas.
